Real Wedding: Brooke & Rob’s Seaside Wedding
Real Wedding: Brooke & Rob’s Seaside Wedding:
This summer I had the pleasure of attending a lovely wedding in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Our friends Rob and Brooke threw a classic seaside wedding with lots of nautical DIY touches.
Let me set the scene…You drive up a long dirt driveway not really knowing where you might end up, though you know you are on an island so an ocean view can’t be far away. You pull up to a large modern building which is actually an art studio and still you can’t see the ocean but you know it must be close. As soon as you step around the building, there it is. A long sloping hill down to the water with a spectacular view looking back to Newport across Narragansett Bay with sailboats floating by just a few hundred feet from the ceremony site. Brooke dazzled in a strapless mermaid gown and her maids wore navy dresses and pink heels. We moved into a tent for the reception and were treated to some wonderful speeches and a clam bake dinner, just what you’d expect form these native Rhode Islanders.
Brooke had lots of personal DIY touches that followed her navy nautical theme. Her printed napkins featured the couple’s new shared last name and complimented the blue and white striped paper straws set out on the bar. She had a framed photo from their engagement shoot for guests to sign in lieu of a traditional guest book. The photo booth was definitely a hit with the guests, along with the candy bar that appeared mid way through the reception! Brooke and Rob also have an adorable (and well-behaved) chocolate lab who took part in the ceremony, so the favors must have been his idea, cookies made to look just like him were set at each place setting!
Brooke later changed into a short whte dress and blue sneakers and hit the dance floor with her bridesmaids.
All this was captured beautifully by the groom’s sister, Kristyn, who is also a wedding photographer. What a fun wedding!

Do you have a good understanding of your consumer’s decision journey toward brand engagement? Understanding consumer behavior will help you know where you need to put your brand’s resources.
In the Harvard Business Review article, Branding in the Digital Age: You’re Spending Your Money in All the Wrong Places, David Edelman, co-leader of McKinsey & Company’s Global Digital Marketing Strategy practice, shared insight into the consumer decision journey. “Consumers still want a clear brand promise and offerings they value. What has changed is when—at what touch points—they are most open to influence, and how you can interact with them at those points. Marketers have long used the famous funnel metaphor to think about touch points: Consumers would start at the wide end of the funnel with many brands in mind and narrow them down to a final choice. In the June 2009 issue of McKinsey Quarterly, my colleague David Court and three coauthors introduced a more nuanced view of how consumers engage with brands: the consumer decision journey. The new consumer decision journey is–Consider, Evaluate, Purchase, Enjoy, Advocate.”

My Fair Wedding
My Fair Wedding:
One of my guilty pleasures is definitely reality TV, especially any wedding-related shows. A favorite would have to be My Fair Wedding with David Tutera, have you seen it? He takes a bride’s basic wedding idea and turns it into a dream come true. It’s always an over-the-top reveal when the couple sees their decorated wedding venue. They are all stunning, but I had to share this one because of the way they used paper lanterns. There were over 2000 purple paper lanterns in several sizes hung from the ceiling of the reception venue! Amazing! Using paper lanterns is the perfect inexpensive way to decorate a large space, especially with the range or colors and styles that are available. Take a look at the video here. Among those who view it that way: Lenovo, whose leadership said this week that Microsoft’s decision to enter the tablet market with Surface is a good thing for PC makers, and won’t undermine their relationship with the company in the least.
“It’s not going to change the partnership,” Gianfranco Lanci, head of Lenovo’s EMEA division, told attendees of the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin. “I think it’s very welcome if other people, including Microsoft, [develop] Windows 8 tablets.”
According to Lanci, Microsoft’s decision to launch its own tablet is a big endorsement of Windows 8, one that shows the company has so much faith in the OS that it’s willing to develop its own hardware for it.
“I think it’s also proof that they … really believe that with Windows 8 they can become a serious player in the tablet area,” Lanci said. “And to have Microsoft doing that, I think it’s a good advertisement for us … and other OEMs. We are not negative at all about this move.”
For some of Microsoft’s PC-maker partners, the company’s upcoming foray into the tablet hardware market is an incursion, while for others it’s simply evidence of Redmond’s faith in its upcoming Windows 8 operating system. The Obama administration announced on Wednesday a $75 million round of grants for groups that teach construction skills to disadvantaged youths while they earn high school degrees or GEDs. But, in a twist, the program -- which has had federal backing since 1992 -- will for the first time this year offer training opportunities in fields beyond construction.
The additional offerings in fields like electrical appliance installation and heating and air conditioning systems are an acknowledgment of the ongoing weakness in construction, and a nod to the increasing emphasis in job training programs on quickly growing, well-paying fields.
"We know that, because we're going through hard times, to also push out areas that are growing," U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said on a call with reporters Wednesday.
As part of the program, called YouthBuild, the Department of Labor will give its annual pot of cash to 74 programs in 28 states and the District of Columbia, serving an estimated 5,000 young people. A full 24 of those programs do not focus on the traditional YouthBuild field of construction, but rather on other fields that are growing more quickly.
Solis announced the grants in Pawtucket, R.I., where the local non-profit Blackstone Valley Community Action Program will administer a $1.1 million grant. The leader of the group, Vincent Ceglie, said that the program's money will be used over three years to put 65 young Rhode Islanders to work building affordable housing. Many of the young people who will participate in the program would be at risk of never receiving a high school-equivalent degree.
"They certainly won't be operating a backhoe or any serious equipment like that, but they'll be learning all sorts of construction techniques," Ceglie said. "The biggest bang for the buck as far as human services programs is in education and job training. That offers the most potential for lifting people out of their circumstances."
Pawtucket is a place that has been hit hard by the ongoing unemployment crisis. Young Rhode Islanders between the ages of 16 and 24, the same age range that will be helped by YouthBuild, have an 18 percent joblessness rate, according to a June report. Nationwide, the numbers are equally stark, with 17.9 percent of young people looking for work unable to find it in July.
"There's truly a need," said Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien, a Democrat.
According to the non-profit YouthBuild USA, which passes Department of Labor grants onto its affiliates, the program had a 78 percent completion rate in 2010. The average wage for those with jobs after completion was $9.20 an hour.
Finding any job at all can be difficult for some of the youths who go through the program without YouthBuild's construction certificate and the degree they earn. Eleven percent of program participants have been convicted of a felony, and their average reading level is in the 7th grade.
Young people are looking for jobs in a labor market that has reached historically unfriendly depths, as summer jobs dry up and older, more-experienced adults compete for even entry-level wages. Another obstacle: this year, the $50 million in additional funding that the Recovery Act gave to YouthBuild in the 2009 fiscal year is now gone.
"Every day about 7,000 high school students drop out across the country," Solis said. "Our dropout crisis risks America's competitiveness and our economic future."
